About the Author
Matt McLauchlin moved to Montreal at age 13 in 1995, and fell in love with the metro immediately: its beauty, its intricacy, and the freedom it afforded him as he entered adolescence and early adulthood. He has been researching, photographing, and documenting it ever since, branching into other areas of public transit as he went. He launched the first version of this website in 2001 on the occasion of the metro’s 35th anniversary.
Matt works as a social worker-psychotherapist and a translator, and advocates for causes such as 2SLGBTQIA+ equality and services, the right to housing, and public transit. When not exploring the metro, he enjoys birdwatching, fibre arts, and building Catalan human towers. After living in Verdun for over 16 years, he now lives near Villa-Maria metro with his partner and step-cat.
Acknowledgments
Thank you to:
- All the workers who over the years have contributed to building, decorating, and operating the metro.
- The Société de transport de Montréal and its employees for the interest and support they’ve provided, especially Benoît Clairoux.
- The original host of the metrodemontreal.com forum, Gilles Roger, and its denizens, especially Ian and Félix who assisted with hosting for years.
- The people who helped me create this most recent version of the website, including Beth, Jenny, Édouard, Gersande, Emre, Donnie, and Allison, and all those who donated to the crowdfunding initiative and then waited a decade for the massive reconstruction, rewriting, and re-photographing project to come to fruition.
- All those who’ve worked to put information and photos of Montreal and its history at our increasingly ready disposal, especially the Archives de la ville de Montréal and the Bibliothèque et archives nationales du Québec.
- My family, my friends, and my wonderful partner Daniel, who have always encouraged me in the delight and excitement I find underground.
