Framed through an onlooker's bicycle, a Montreal police officer walks past the covered body of a cyclist killed in a hit-and-run accident yesterday.
The truck driver who struck and killed a cyclist in a hit-and-run accident yesterday had been weaving aggressively through traffic beforehand, witnesses said.
Both the truck and the cyclist were heading north on St. Denis St. in the Villeray district around 9 a.m. when the truck turned right onto de Castelnau St., police and witnesses said.
The man on the bicycle was hit, run over and died on the spot.
The truck continued on its route in the northcentral part of the city.
"I saw a white cube van and it turned right at the lights," said Lise Mongrain, who was driving not far behind the truck when it hit the man.
"It hit (the cyclist).
"I saw the truck's wheel go right over his head. I knew that he was dead.
"The truck didn't stop."
Mongrain said the victim looked between 25 and 30 years old.
Police had still not identified the victim yesterday afternoon.
A police spokesperson said that he was around 30 years old.
Mongrain said the truck driver must have seen the cyclist when he passed him but might not have known he had hit anyone.
She said she had seen the truck being driven dangerously.
"I noticed him weaving around other cars and passing people since Cherrier St. (several kilometres south of de Castelnau)," she said.
"He was cutting off everyone," said Veronic Charron, another witness.
The victim's body and bicycle sat on the pavement until early afternoon, covered by plastic sheets. The collision with the truck had knocked the bike completely around; the handlebars and front wheel, protruding from the sheets, were twisted backward.
A crowd of people stood for hours at all sides of the police cordon.
At noon, the victim's cell phone began ringing and a police officer gingerly removed it from the body and carried it to a truck. About half an hour later, it rang again from inside the truck.
When the body was finally removed, a police officer carried away the victim's helmet and sunglasses. The helmet was crushed on one side and splattered with blood. One witness said the helmet came off on impact and might not have been properly fastened.
On the pavement, the man's grey mountain bike was visible, and next to it, the plastic visor of his helmet, which had snapped off.
Many witnesses confirmed what had happened and provided a description of the truck - a plain white cube van, said Montreal police Constable Olivier Laplante, but no one got the license number.
Police are asking the truck driver to turn himself in at any Montreal station.
Anyone with information is asked to call Info-Crime at (514) 393-1133.

_________________ Michel Blanchet (BBKoala)
